The Benefits of Darning Your Pointe Shoes

The Benefits of Darning Your Pointe Shoes

Darning is one skill most dancers dread to learn, if they aren't keen sewers, but why is it so important?

Firstly, what is darning...?

Darning is where a dancer uses thread to create a sewn layer over the platform to the sole of their shoe. They use a chain stitch in a circular pattern on the tip and then side to side along the back.

Darning is so often used because:

  • It protects the satin and prevents rips.
  • Improves stability for the dancer when on pointe.
  • Allows for more grip between the shoes and the floor.
  • Improves confidence in the dancer as they are less worried about slipping.

There are two styles of darning, just a ring around the edge of the shoe to improve stability or they darn the entire platform for grip and longevity. It is always individual to the dancer!

Finally, to darn it is best to use special darning thread and a curved needle, both of these can be found in our store or online!
