Tips for Starting Ballet as an Adult Beginner

Starting Ballet as an Adult

It can be daunting starting something new as an adult, so here are a few things you might need to know before attending your first beginner ballet class.

  1. You are not expected to have the full kit from day one. As long as you are comfortable and in tighter fitting gym wear your teacher will still be able to correct you, we suggest leggings and a tight fitting t-shirt. Also socks are just fine to begin with, but ballet shoes do add extra comfort and cushioning during class while also being less slippy.

  2. Everyone has been a beginner once! It’s okay to be nervous, but everyone will have been there at some point. Try your best to communicate with the teacher and embrace all the new things.

  3. Try and listen to everything the teacher is telling you, the corrections they give are not personal but them trying to enable you to grow and progress as a dancer.

  4. Turn up 10-15 mins early to warm up a little, ballet class at first takes a lot to adjust to using all different and new muscles so being a bit warm before class can help your body cope with this better.

  5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! The teacher is there to help you and guide you on your ballet journey so ask away if something doesn't make sense, they would always rather you ask and understand than blindly follow.

  6. Finally, make sure to check the class you’re attending is suitable for complete beginners, they are usually well labelled but nothing is worse than being out of your depth and not enjoying yourself.

Overall, it is turning up and having fun that matters most so try and enjoy yourself and set realistic expectations.
